Themed on Cities, Grow in Difference, 2017 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (Shenzhen) was jointly curated by curator and critic Hou Hanru, architects and founding partners of URBANUS Liu Xiaodu and Meng Yan (in alphabetical order). The Biennale drew attention to urban village, a unique product of China’s urbanization and take the opportunity to initiate an unprecedented urban experiment. There were more than 200 participants on the list from more than 25 countries and regions. Included in the list are the world's top architects and architect offices, renowned scholars in architecture and urban planning, well-established international and domestic artists, art organizations and agencies, colleges, universities and institutions at home and abroad, etc. Meanwhile, for the first time ever in the history of the Biennale, works solicited through open call will also be included, injecting great vitality from bottom up into the exhibition. Over 200 forums, performances and workshops collectively presented audience a holistic experience of exploration. In the meantime, other than the five branch spaces in Luohu, Yantian, Longhua and Guangming districts, there were also 14 collateral exhibitions and events presented all over the city.
The CHINAFRICA presented “Blackout” at the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture under the support of New Century Art Foundation. Through the project, artists managed to reveal, in various ways, the connections between Africans and China. The discussion held during the process also became a piece of work entitled Beauty Lies Right in Complexity, which was presented at the GFZK Leipzig.
