Parallel: New Century series of Contemporary Art
About the project:
NCAF invites Ms. Shu Kewen, renowned media celebrity, scholar and curator, to take the role as the chief curator of the project. A group of young scholars and curators will be invited to participate in the project to conduct a survey of pioneer contemporary Chinese artists on a case-by-case basis. Each writer will be paired with a contemporary artist and through interviews, research into archival documents and comparative study between the artist and others, the writer is expected to find a specific perspective to explore further into the artist’s practice and thoughts within a broader dimension of history, endeavoring to cast new light on the interplay between artist’s individual practice and the many historical clues and contexts. Different approaches will be applied to different cases to cast new light on the concerns and reflection of each practitioners.

Editor-in-Chief:
Shu Kewen (Senior editor, former chief editor of Sanlian Life Week, art critic and curator)

How will this project be conducted?:
Scholars/curators born in the 70s or 80s will be paired with artists born in the 60s to conduct a one-to-one survey. The final product of the survey will not be a biography or art review. Each writer is expected to find his/her own way to conduct this research and to present the final product. Ms. Shu Kewen, chief curator of the project, will organize a group meeting on a monthly basis during which all the participating writers may brief their progress and share their visions towards the project with others.

Why do we initiate the project?:
Our goal is to conduct a survey of the fundamental aspects of Chinese contemporary art of the past three decades.
