Dedicated to supporting and encouraging art historical research and art criticism in the Chinese language, the New Century Art Foundation, in collaboration with esteemed scholars of art history and donors, is pleased to launch “Mo Yuan: Art History Research and Critical Writing Grants” for related fields.

 

“Mo Yuan Grants” will be held every two years, with a total sum of RMB 500,000 for the following four areas in art writing.

 

  1. Ancient and modern Chinese art history: 1 candidate, RMB 150,000.
  2. Foreign art history: 1 candidate, RMB 150,000
  3. Art history in translation: 1 candidate, RMB 100,000
  4. Critical writing on Chinese contemporary art: 1 candidate, RMB 100,000

 

The academic committee is composed of renowned scholars in art history and related fields in China to ensure that the “Mo Yuan Grants” would achieve its objectives.

The selection committee for each edition of the “Mo Yuan: Art History Research and Critical Writing Grants” is recommended and appointed by the Academic Committee. Based on the submissions, we have organized two juries for “Art History Writings/Translations” and “Contemporary Art Writings”. The jury was convened by Wan Muchun, with Dong Jie as the Secretary General.

How to Apply & Deadline

Art History Research and Translation

 

Each applicant is limited to submitting one book written in Chinese or one translation into Chinese, published in Mainland China after January 1, 2010.

 

The application should be sent to moyuan@ncartfoundation.org before June 15, 2022, indicating the specific application grant (e.g., “Application for Foreign Art History”)

Critical Writing on Chinese Contemporary Art

 

Each applicant should submit 3-5 articles written in Chinese or English and published on public media platforms after January 1, 2017.

 

The application should be sent to moyuan@ncartfoundation.org before June 15, 2022.

2022年3月,首届“墨缘:艺术史研究与写作资助计划”发布征集公告,至6月共征集近百名研究学者的申请。2022年7月召开第一次评审会议,就评审细则和评选标准进行讨论,评委开始独立审阅作品。同年10月召开第二次评审会议,评出初选名单,并对初选作品进行评议。评委对初选作品再进行独立阅读。2023年3月19日在杭州召开终评评审会,现场经过两轮不记名投票,最终评选出“墨缘”2022-2023年4位获资助学者。获资助学者包括:中国艺术史(15万元)、外国艺术史(15万元)、译著(10万元)和中国当代艺术写作(10万元)4个方向,相关资金将用于支持他们未来在相关领域的研究及写作。

该书是对中国美术史中图像之学的一次较有成效的新尝试。此著从宋代图像中的博物特征切入,紧扣宋代特殊文化背景中儒家的经学、博物学和绘画、版画等艺术形式之间的有机关联,对文人艺术、宫廷艺术、世俗艺术均做出了自己的独特见解。此书结构清晰,有点有面,叙述流畅,在宋代绘画艺术的解读方面作出了有益的探索。有关自然图像、博物文化和中国古代艺术之间联系的讨论,近期也逐渐成为学界关注的热点,希望本书作者能够在未来研究中更全面地吸纳最新学术成果,进一步推动此项研究走向深入。

该书以法国哲学家吉尔·德勒兹的艺术理论为研究对象,以身体、空间、时间这组关键词来切入对其艺术观点的分析,同时结合了众多中西现当代艺术案例进行具有针对性的解读,较好地回应了我们当前跨语境、跨学科、跨媒介时域下的艺术问题。书中关于德勒兹与中国艺术理论与西方现当代重要艺术理论的对照和关联对中西艺术理论和批评的重思具有启发性。尤其是透过此一理论视角对艺术家和作品解读提供了某种新的思考路径。诸如此类的努力虽然仍存在理论和艺术实践语境结合的些许隔阂,但无疑对此一领域是具有学科建构性的价值。

经过评委各自独立审读,提交了进入讨论环节的备选名单,其中有四位备选者重合。后经过讨论,在这四位中选出了两位作者。经过二轮讨论,我们一致认为杨天歌以他提交的五篇文章作为此次评选的入选人。杨天歌的艺术评论既有一定的理论支持,又有实在而具体的现场感,他在个人观看经验和理论意识之间建立的艺术评论,体现出当代艺术作为一种具有反思性质的艺术实践,其创造性既在与人文学科的相关理论相伴而行,也兼具着历史的反思和创作的开放气质。所以我们鼓励这种文风扎实稳健的写作。
